On 14 October, the first regular scheduled passenger flight took off with AeroSHARK technology. The Boeing 777-300ER operated by SWISS flew across the Atlantic from Zurich Airport, located in to Kloten in the canton of Zurich, to Miami in the USA, further details of which can be found in a press release issued by the airline.
The AeroSHARK technology was developed by Lufthansa Technik in conjunction with the German chemicals company BASF. The fuselage and engine nacelles of the aircraft are covered with a transparent film that imitates the streamlined, hydrodynamic properties of shark skin. The foil features tiny riblets 50 micrometers deep that serve to reduce aerodynamic drag while the aircraft is in the sky.
According to Dieter Vranckx, the use of this technology shows how innovations can help to improve sustainability within the aviation industry. “Our aircraft fleet is already one of the most advanced and most carbon-efficient in Europe”, the SWISS CEO explains in the press release, adding that: “Thanks to AeroSHARK, we can enhance these credentials even further in a field where every saving counts”.
