Winterthur Gas & Diesel Ltd. (WinGD) and the South Korean shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) have entered into an agreement for ammonia-powered ship engines. According to a press release from WinGD, the letter of intent was signed at the Gastech conference in Singapore. It states that SHI will install WinGD’s X-DF-A dual-fuel ammonia engines in new ships in future.
As part of this collaboration, this engine will be prepared for integration with additional ammonia fuel systems and auxiliary machinery for a range of ship designs, including oil tankers, container ships, and ammonia carriers. WinGD anticipates that the new X-DF-A ammonia engines will be commissioned from the first quarter of 2025.
Like its methanol-powered counterpart, the X-DF-M, the X-DF-A works with a high-pressure diesel combustion process, with injection of liquid ammonia for ignition supported by a low portion of pilot fuel. Validation of WinGD’s ammonia-powered engine concept will start on single and multi-cylinder test engines in Winterthur and Shanghai this year. WinGD’s global test center is in China.
WinGD’s Director of Sales, Volkmar Galke, believes that this collaboration provides WinGD with the opportunity to work toward the future with one of the world’s largest and most respected high-quality shipbuilders. He adds: “The aim is to prepare engine and vessel designs as well as fuel system integration specifications that will lead to X-DF-A engines being deployed on a wide range of SHI-built, ammonia-fuelled vessels.” ce/gba
