Kloten/Rubigen - The two founding companies of zirkulit AG, Kästli Bau and Eberhard Bau, have joined forces with the construction firms Grisoni-Zaugg SA, the JMS Group and the Lötscher Plus Group to found zirkulit Beton AG. They will use zirkulit’s CO2 storage technology in connection with recycled concrete.

Founded by Eberhard Bau based in Kloten in the canton of Zurich and Kästli Bau from Rubigen in the canton of Bern in 2021, zirkulit AG and its zirkulit brand are being strengthened: Five family companies have now joined forces to found zirkulit Beton AG. The company brings together partners who work together with the aim of binding CO2 in recycled concrete granulate and then using this in construction projects. Alongside Eberhard and Kästli, the Grisoni Group from Vuadens in the canton of Fribourg, the JMS Group (part of Johann Müller AG) from Schmerikon in the canton of St.Gallen and the Lucerne-based Lötscher Plus Group are all involved in the new zirkulit Beton AG.

“After several years of development work by the companies Eberhard and Kästli, the first circular concrete with a minimal CO2 footprint can now be used in central and eastern Switzerland as well as in the canton of Vaud thanks to new partners,” as Daniel Kästli, Management Board member at zirkulit Beton AG, explains in a press release. Reto Märki, Managing Director of zirkulit Beton AG, adds: “I am pleased to be taking this challenging step with my team and partners. Circular construction is a central element for sustainable development”.

The aim of this new alliance is to store 25,000 tons of CO2 in concrete every year across Switzerland from 2030 onwards. Theoretically, 50,000 tons might even be possible, according to the press release. At the same time, this would ensure that more than 2 million tons of high-quality construction waste would be returned to the cycle. “Up to this point, the potential of this approach has not been exploited due to weak market demand. This is now set to change”, the press release explains.

In terms of circular housing, the buildings must be constructed in such a way as to ensure maximum circularity, all the while conserving resources and allowing future generations to re-use stone and brick in new construction projects. To this end, zirkulit has also entered into strategic partnerships: swisspor (from Stans in the canton of Nidwalden) offers mineral-based insulation solutions, Stahlbeton Bauteile AG (based in Frick in the canton of Aargau) manufactures components used in building facades and ceiling constructions, while Sievert AG (from Ober-Ohringen in the canton of Zurich) supplies rendering solutions. ce/mm
