Zurich – LafargeHolcim contributed a specialized cement for the construction or expansion of eight stadiums that will be used in the football World Cup in Russia. The construction giant’s cement will help avoid cracks and improve the durability of the buildings.

Several key infrastructure projects have been pursued in Russia in preparation for the football World Cup. Many of the construction solutions were delivered by the Swiss building materials company LafargeHolcim.

Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium, which will host seven games including the opening game and the final, was one of the projects to receive Swiss cement. According to LafargeHolcim, this project required a specialized cement to meet its technical requirements – high compressive strength, reduced hydration heat to avoid cracks and increased durability of construction.

LafargeHolcim also provided building materials for the Kazan Arena and infrastructure projects such as airports and roads being built to support the sporting event.

“Large infrastructure projects built to tight deadlines for such events are always a major challenge,” commented Marcel Cobuz, member of the group executive committee. However, he added that thanks to its large network of cement plants and aggregate quarries across Russia, the company from the Greater Zurich Area could rise to the challenge.
