Zurich/Krefeld - Outokumpu is the first company operating in the steel industry to use robotics in safety management processes. To this end, the ANYmal robot is to be deployed at the company’s Krefeld site. By 2025, Outokumpu is planning to achieve the lowest accident frequency rate in the industry.

The Finnish stainless steel producer Outokumpu is using a robot developed by the Zurich-based firm ANYbotics for safety management processes, further details of which can be found in a press release. The company is now deploying Artificial Intelligence (AI) and robot technology for safety inspections at its site in Krefeld, Germany, to improve and digitize the monitoring of health and safety, the press release explains.

To this end, Outokumpu signed an agreement with the robotics company ANYbotics back in April of this year. In June, the first ANYmal robot was delivered to Outokumpu’s Krefeld site. The innovative technology is to be used at locations in Finland, Germany and Sweden.

The ANYmal is a robust walking robot that is capable of performing diagnostic and control functions in lab settings and industrial facilities that are difficult or dangerous for people to access. The ANYmal can carry out optical, acoustic and chemical checks, with error reports at plants directly sent to a control center for maintenance work to be initiated. According to ANYbotics, the use of the ANYmal robot increases the operational reliability of plants and reduces maintenance costs.

“ANYbotics’ robotics technology will help us to increase safety by reducing employee exposure to hazardous substances and environments, optimize production through preventive maintenance, and decrease environmental impacts”, comments Thorsten Piniek, Vice President, Health & Safety at Outokumpu, in the press release. “However, they will not replace human workforce but instead automate some parts of the inspection work”, he adds. ce/gba
