Bellinzona - The canton of Ticino has guaranteed innovation financing and the promotion of the regional economy in the period from 2024 through to 2027. The Council of State, which is the government of the canton of Ticino, has approved a trio of loans totaling 60 million Swiss francs overall to finance these measures.

The cantonal government of the canton of Ticino has guaranteed the financing of measures as part of a legislative package for economic innovation in the period from 2024 to 2027. This includes the Switzerland Innovation Park Ticino with the Swiss Drone Base Camp, ICT funding in the area of software and data engineering, and the competence center Lifestyle Tech Center. A press release covering the regional government’s resolution discusses “key innovations” in this context. The future organizational structure of the Switzerland Innovation Park Ticino with its three competence centers is to be regulated by the Economic Innovation Act. Another new feature in the area of innovation promotion relates to strengthening SME services, the press release explains, with the promotion of tourism representing a third area.

In addition to the amendments to the Innovation Act with the inclusion of the Innovation Park, the government decision provides for the approval of a credit facility in the amount of 25 million Swiss francs aimed at the promotion of innovation and research synergies. In addition, a credit line of 23.4 million Swiss francs was approved for cantonal projects in the area of regional economic policy, with a further 11.6 million Swiss francs being put towards measures to supplement the implementation program for regional economic policy in the period from 2024 to 2027. In terms of the canton’s present financial situation, the press release states that it is more or less on a par with the previous legislative period. As such, no adjustments were made in this regard.

The Innovation Park comprises competence centers that are tasked with promoting cooperations between research and business in key sectors of the Ticino economy. Up to this point, three centers have been established in the canton of Ticino: The Swiss Drone Base Camp on the site of the former military airport in Lodrino, the Lifestyle Tech Center in Lugano and the Life Sciences Competence Center in Bellinzona. ce/gba
