Davos - RAMMS AG became the first spin-off from the Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research on July 1. The cmopany models natural hazards such as avalanches and mudslides using its eponymous software.

Following an agreement with the Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research (SLF), RAMMS AG was founded in Davos Wiesen in the canton of Graubünden, Switzerland, on July 1, 2024. As detailed in a press release, the company models natural hazards such as avalanches and mudslides using its eponymous and internally developed software. RAMMS stands for Rapid Mass Movement Simulation and is the first spin-off from the SLF.

The software now in use was first designed by Marc Christen, founder and CEO of RAMMS, in 2006. Since then, it has been further developed and refined. The models incorporate research findings from the SLF, for example from the test site in the Vallée de la Sionne in the canton of Valais, in the Illgraben or from rockfall experiments in Chant Sura in the canton of Graubünden. The Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research (WSL), of which the SLF is part, retains the rights to the software developed on this basis. RAMMS itself generates income from licensing to engineering firms that work in the field of natural hazard management around the world. The company also oversees the use of the software at universities that use RAMMS in teaching.

“The founding of RAMMS AG is the fulfillment of a long-cherished dream. RAMMS is a matter close to my heart”, comments Marc Christen in the press release. ce/eb
