Greater Zurich start-ups shine at 5G competition
Bern/Zurich – The winners of the Swisscom StartUp Challenge 2020 have now been announced. They will now have the chance to put their developments to the test in Swisscom’s 5G lab. The competition was held on a global basis this year for the first time. Overall, four of the five winners are based in the Greater Zurich Area.  
Gilytics impresses with software to aid construction of power lines
Zurich – Gilytics has raised a total of 1 million Swiss francs as part of a financing round. The ETH Zurich spin-off has developed a software solution that can help with laying power lines by leveraging the benefits of geodata.
Biognosys expands lab in Greater Zurich
Biognosys is expanding its laboratory in the Bio-Technopark Schlieren-Zurich. The company will consequently have one of the largest high-end mass spectrometry laboratories worldwide. The lab will provide contract research services to global pharma.    
MaxWell Biosystems raises 4 million Swiss francs
Stäfa ZH/Zurich – ETH spin-off MaxWell Biosystems has raised 4 million francs in a funding round. Investors included Sensirion, another spin-off from ETH. MaxWell Biosystems is developing technology that will help to accelerate drug discovery.  
AlgoTrader raises new capital
Zurich – AlgoTrader has secured a seven-figure investment from the Finlab EOS VC Fund. With this, the fintech from the Greater Zurich Area has now raised 5.2 million Swiss francs through its Series A financing round.
BMW backs embotech technology
Zurich – Automotive manufacturer BMW is joining forces with embotech in Zurich and Seoul Robotics from South Korea on its startup accelerator program. The aim is to develop new technologies for automation in production and assembly.

Blood pressure medication suppresses mortality risk in COVID-19 patients
Lugano – A study has shown that medication commonly and safely prescribed to treat high blood pressure reduces the risk of death in COVID-19 patients by more than 60 percent. Sophisticated biostatistical methods were used to uncover this finding from complex data sets.
Holographically guided spinal surgery
A team from Balgrist University Hospital has carried out the world’s first holographically navigated spinal operation with direct navigation. This was the culmination of a project organized by University Medicine Zurich. Both ETH Zurich and the start-up Incremed also played a major role in the project.
