The wireless measuring device from Piavita has a belt that holds the device in place on the chest of the horse. It can measure different vital signs and make these available on the base station in real time. The benefit over other traditional devices is that this technology makes it possible to monitor horses from anywhere at any time, as it can be fitted while they are in the stables or on the meadow.
This device will above all help veterinarians, with continuous monitoring not only making treatment easier, but also more targeted. In addition, this monitoring supports the early diagnosis of illnesses.
As Piavita just reported in a press release, the company was able to secure US$5.5 million in a funding round. The round was led by True Ventures, a venture capital firm from San Francisco.
“We are excited to back the highly talented Piavita team in their mission to bring veterinary medical technology into the wearable, wireless and prevention-focused future,” said Toni Schneider, partner at True Ventures, who grew up in Switzerland and later studied in the USA. He is well known for his role as CEO of Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com. Toni Schneider and Piavita CEO and co-founder Dorina Thiess first met on a trip to the Silicon Valley with the Venture Leaders Technology Team.
Other investors include another California-based venture capitalist FryFly Venture Partners as well as Zürcher Kantonalbank and private investors.
Piavita has already started selling the measuring devices in Europe. As Dorina Thiess told the Limmatter Zeitung newspaper in December, expansion to the UK and USA is currently being planned.
