USI Startup Center repositions itself
Lugano – The new Ticino center for the promotion of startups will make the East Campus Lugano its home. This was a strategic choice for proximity to the Informatics and Biomedical Sciences faculties at the Università della Svizzera italiana (USI) and to the innovative technologies of the University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland (SUPSI).  
Venture Kick looks back on successful year
Schlieren ZH – Startups enjoying support from venture capitalist Venture Kick received a total of 724 million Swiss francs last year, despite the coronavirus pandemic. What’s more, they created over 1,000 new jobs.  
New funding enables Microcaps to prepare for market
Zurich – Microcaps has raised 5 million Swiss francs in a seed financing round. The startup has developed a method to manufacture microcapsules for the fields of pharmaceuticals, nutrition and cosmetics. It will now be able to commercialize its product.
Mirai Foods secures funds for cultivated meat
Wädenswil ZH – Mirai Foods is set to commercialize earlier than anticipated: the startup from the Greater Zurich Area has raised US$2.4 million in a first tranche of seed financing. It is now preparing to transform its prototype of slaughter-free meat into a commercial product.
Institute develops double antibody against COVID-19
Bellinzona – Researchers at the Institute for Research in Biomedicine have managed to combine two antibodies against COVID-19 into a single entity. This double antibody not only offers reliable protection against the coronavirus and all known variants, but also prevents it from mutating further.  
Quercis Pharma licenses key patents
Zug - Quercis Pharma has concluded an exclusive, worldwide licensing agreement for two patents. This expands the patent to cover its drug candidate aimed at treating venous thromboembolism, cancer tumor metastasis and acute respiratory problems in COVID-19 patients.  
Further rise in number of UZH spin-offs
The University of Zurich has given rise to a total of 75 spin-offs over the past ten years. In the past year alone, seven founding teams decided to pursue their business visions independently. These are mostly MedTech or BioTech start-ups. 
City of Zug embracing further digitization
Zug – The City of Zug has launched a new eGovernment solution. The eZug app allows users to digitally obtain services from local authorities. At the heart of the app is the eID+ technology developed by Procivis. This is already being used in the canton of Schaffhausen, located in the north of the Greater Zurich Area.
Robot to carry out spinal surgery
Zurich – In the future, it seems likely that robots will be able to work with greater precision than humans in delicate operations on the spinal column. A team of international researchers has now started work on developing a robot of this kind. Balgrist University Hospital is also involved in this project. It will be focusing on developing sensors.
