Swiss innovation is breaking records! The country's inventive spirit shines through with Europe's second-highest number of patent applications per capita. Even more impressive, Swiss academics are among the continent's top three most prolific patent creators. These remarkable achievements were recently documented by the European Patent Office (EPO).

Zurich - UMAMI is building a new indoor farm for microgreens and herbs in Zurich. This will require around 90 percent less water and land than a conventional greenhouse. The start-up raised the requisite funding for this project in a Series A financing round.

Zug/Abu Dhabi - The Artificial Intelligence (AI) company Swiss AI, which is based in the Greater Zurich Area, and Presight from Abu Dhabi intend to jointly offer smart and sustainable solutions for urban environments. The two companies reached an agreement to this end at the technology trade fair GITEX Global in Dubai.

Manno - Since it was founded in 2014, Tecnopolo Ticino has played a vital role in the development of 72 companies. Together they have accumulated almost 80 million Swiss francs in capital. The key sectors are ICT, life sciences, agritech, and cleantech.

Schlieren/Jefferson - The InSphero platform for liver safety has identified the vast majority of drugs known to be toxic to the liver. The benchmarking study was carried out in collaboration with the US FDA, the regulatory agency for the US market, using 3D microtissues of the human liver.

Opfikon/Vienna - Cytosurge and Lexogen have agreed to enter into a partnership in connection with the sequencing of live cells. The two companies will each contribute modern technologies with the aim of documenting genetic changes in cells without interfering with their natural processes.

Zurich/Schlieren - Somagenetix AG has secured 10 million Swiss francs in a Series A financing round. The biotech company plans to use the fresh capital to advance its gene therapy for chronic granulomatosis into the clinical phase.

Zurich - Positrigo has been awarded the CE Mark in Europe for its PET imaging system for the brain. The NeuroLF system received clearance for the US market as recently as July. Positrigo intends to sell the system via a network of established companies across Europe.

Schlieren/Boston - A four-year-old boy has received two transplants at Massachusetts General Hospital using denovoSkin from CUTISS. This is the first time a patient in the USA has been treated with the biotechnology company’s dermo-epidermal skin transplant.
